March 2024- "Lord Lovat's Lament"

Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat 1667-1747

This month’s free tab is an arrangement of the traditional Celtic bagpipe tune “Lord Lovat’s Lament”. It has been credited to both Ewen MacGregor and his pupil David Fraser. They were both pipers to Simon Lord Lovat, who was the 11th Scots nobleman to hold that title. Simon met an unfortunate end when he backed the wrong side in the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, and was subsequently beheaded.

The tune has nonetheless survived over the centuries as part of the traditional bagpipe and harp repertoire, and is played both as a slow aire as well as a march. Here’s a link to a YouTube video of it being played in both styles by Scottish fiddler Elsa McTaggart.

Wishing you all a Happy (and safe) St. Patrick’s Day!

In music and friendship,
