December 2025 - "Der Heiland ist geboren" (The Savior Is Born)

Der Heiland ist geboren (“The Savior Is Born”) is a Christmas hymn from Austria, with its earliest known text printed on a broadside in Innsbruck in 1638. The melody most commonly associated with the carol was preserved in a manuscript around 1780, giving the song its recognizable tune. Later, in 1881, Wilhelm Pailler published a six‑verse version, further cementing its place in the Austrian folk tradition.

The text reflects the biblical Christmas story, echoing the angelic proclamation in Luke 2:10–11. Its verses emphasize joy, salvation, and the invitation for all Christians to come to the Christ Child in the humble stable.

Today, Der Heiland ist geboren remains part of the Protestant hymnal used in German‑speaking churches. It is sung during Advent and Christmas services, often by choirs, congregations, and folk ensembles in Austria and southern Germany. The carol also appears in regional songbooks and is performed in Christmas concerts and nativity celebrations, where its simple refrain makes it accessible for communal singing.
