The tune "Noel Nouvelet" is a traditional French carol, originally written sometime in the late 15th Century and was used as a New Year's carol. Over the years, it has been used for many different hymns, and has also been used as a secular dance tune.
There have been a number of English translations of the Christmas carol, the first of which appeared in print in 1692. A number of different English translations and interpretations have also been published over the years. The same melody is also used for the Easter hymn "Now the Green Blade Riseth".
This is a 3-part arrangement, with melody, harmony, and backup parts. Find a couple of dulcimer-playing friends to join you and enjoy.
One of my favorite versions of this tune was recorded by the Celtic musician Loreena McKennitt, which she does with a rather "middle eastern" flavor, using the original French lyrics. Here is a link to a YouTube video of her performance.
Wishing you all a blessed Christmas season, and a joyous and music filled New Year!
--Tull
Here are the complete set of lyrics:
1. Sing we now of Christmas,
Noel sing we here.
Sing our grateful praises
To the maid so dear.
Chorus
Sing we Noel!
The King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas.
Sing we here, Noel!
2. From the Eastern kingdoms
Come the wise men far.
Bearing ancient treasure,
Following yonder star. Chorus
3. From the distant mountains,
Hear the trumpet sound.
With angelic blessings
On the silent town. Chorus
4. Come let us surround Him
On this magic night.
Gather here around Him,
Wondrous Babe of light. Chorus
