This month's Free
Tablature is
|

This month's free tab is 2-part arrangement of the fiddle tune "Kiowa Special". Kiowa refers to a Native American Indian tribe who lived mostly in the plains of west Texas, Oklahoma, and eastern New Mexico at the time of the European arrival. Today, there are about 12,000 members of this federally recognized tribe living in southwestern Oklahoma.
The exact origins of the tune are not clear, but it is popular in old-time and bluegrass circles in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. I learned it from Brad Leftwich, a wonderful old-time fiddler who now lives in southern Indiana, but was originally from Oklahoma. He learned it from 4th-generation Oklahoma fiddling legend Earl Collins.
The B-part of the tune has the typical "Indian war cry" minor chord progression that is found in several other Indian-themed fiddle tunes, such as "Pow Wow" and "Commanche". The form of this tune is AA-BB, but it always ends with the "A-part".
Find a dulcimer playing partner, and enjoy this unusual tune. It's a bit challenging, especially that B-part, but it's a fun tune, and well worth the effort.
Cheers,
--Tull
