This month's Free
Tablature is
|

This month's tab offering is a 3-part arrangement of the traditional tune "Child
Grove". It first appeared in print in an early 1700's edition of a
collection of English country dance music compiled by John Playford entitled
"The English Dancing Master", but there is evidence that this tune was being
played for quite some time prior to that. It is a "minor mode" tune
(generally thought of as Dorian), and works well out of D-A-d tuning with a capo
installed at the first fret. The two harmony parts
presented
here also are arranged out of D-A-d tuning, and also require the use of a capo.
(If you don't have a capo, you can always use a long pencil with a couple of
strong rubber bands. Wooden chopsticks also make good capos!) The
haunting sound of the Dorian mode makes this a perfect tune for the upcoming
Halloween season, so find at least 2 other players to fully enjoy this "treat"!
If you have access to a bass dulcimer (tuned an octave lower than a standard
instrument), try playing the "harmony 2" part on it.
Cheers,
--Tull
